} cool dad

i don't know when I started noticing that my dad is really into movies. years ago, when we still used a DVD player, my dad would bring a few new (pirated) DVDs every weekend. mostly new releases. he would know which shops sell the better quality pirated stuff, and he would know to wait a while before getting a new release because the first batch of pirated DVDs would be the kind of crap where the guy sneaks a camera into the cinema and records the whole thing in secret.

now we are equipped with this awesome thingamajigger that can load and play the movie file right away, so we don't even have to buy DVDs anymore. straight from the torrent into the TV. again, at first it would be hollywood stuff, old chinese movies, some national geographic TV series.

when korean movies and TV shows became more popular, my dad also started downloading some of these. recently I noticed that his taste has become less hollywood blockbuster and more arthouse/European. Last week we watched Farewell My Queen, a French movie about Marie Antoinette and one of her readers. today we watched Black Mirror, a British TV mini drama series. not quite "indie" but not quite conventional either. could it be, that my dad is... Cool?

what he definitely is though, is he is interested in a lot of things. i hope when i get older i will be like my dad. even now i find it easy to forget a life outside of work. it is a dangerous place to be.
