} soome thoughts

if I have to confess something, studying for the indon law module isn't as painful as i thought. at the start it was supposed to be a chance to know more about indonesia and, maybe also, about myself. the place which defined my life during childhood. it didn't turn out quite that romantic, of course, it wasn't as though every friday morning was an illuminating session into my past. (it was, mostly, very sleepy, and i was always late.)

but now that i am finally taking the time to do the readings (SO MANY MORE READINGS TO GO) and think and reflect, i guess it is resembling more of that introspective journey i was expecting. though i have to be careful not to take too romanticised a view of this study, much like the old scholars like Supomo and van Vallenhoven -- too romantic ideas and ultimately bad for reality.

it's good also that i ended up with the issue on bribery and corruption for the Vis. gitta said it was appropriate for an indonesian to be researching on this issue, haa. so i'll go then, delve deeper into the world of corruption, even if only through books and writings. :) maybe i'll learn something about the real world through it.

i think i know already, at least this much: it's fine to make jokes, laugh about how commonplace bribery is in indo.. but i dont think its okay to accept it as a culture. its a source of interest, like a quirk, so it's too easy to fall into saying 'that's just the way we do things'. it shouldn't be. not when it can be turned into an excuse for something of a bigger scale.
