} the old tourists

ok i no longer hate the new hotmail as much because now i can view only Unread messages and now i have trimmed down my unread e-mails from 400+ TO A STAGGERING 95. *self-pat-on-back*

anyway.

the other day i saw an old couple that caught my eye. it was barely a 5-second affair, they were going up an escalator and i was going down. they first caught my eye because the old woman was wearing a pink-gingham-bow hairband (which was so incongruous to how she looked but the effect is very adorable. :x)

it was while i was staring at the cute old woman that her husband appeared from behind her, and the expression that grew on his face as he stepped up the escalator is something i feel i've only seen in movies or tourism advertisements. his eyes widened and his mouth opened into a wide smile.

it was a look of WONDER. here, in boring old orchard road in boring old singapore. and as the couple stood there holding each other, looking around with that expression on their faces, i realised that maybe that is the thing that we all need more of in our lives. not happiness, not money, not even love, but WONDER. that sense of awe, and mystery, and magic, about life and the world, that keeps us gaping and surprised, and wanting for more.
