} another unadventure

tuesday's dinner went on very pleasantly, the vietnamese food was good. until claire and I hatched the HARE-BRAINED plan of catching the 10pm match after dinner (at serene centre macs) AND THEN catch a 12mn bus to ang mo kio to watch the 2.30am match. (we both wanted to experience the atmosphere at a coffeeshop and her house is nearby).

so that was how we ended up at Serene Centre and caught

ROUND OF 16, JAPAN VS PARAGUAY

i dont think either team played very well that night, but since my loyalty lies with Japan, i was quite upset by the outcome. also, Japan had SO MANY great chances to score... but it just didnt happen, and about midway through the second half claire and i REALISED WITH HORROR that the match would go into extra time and there would no longer be any buses in operation by that time. so the rest of the second half went on with us praying there would be a goal, and cries of 'NOO WE CAN'T GO HOME' whenever the attempt missed/was saved.

the penalty kicks... omg. i had both eyes covered because i was too scared to watch. right before Komano stepped up to the ball the guys behind us started complaining like 'WHYY did the coach pick him' and 'NOO not that no.3' and i had a sudden TERRIBLE FEELING. and he really missed!! sigh. it felt horrible. (even more, for Komano i guess. devastated? mortified? might-as-well-disembowel-myself? hmm.)

but anyway, by the time the whole thing ended it was around 1am, and that was why we were stuck in Serene Centre and caught

ROUND OF 16, PORTUGAL VS SPAIN

at first i wanted to support spain (due to my dislike for c ronaldo) but changed my mind and supported portugal. should have known better, i THOUGHT my jinxing power was gone but i underestimated myself. portugal looked stronger in the first half, but played so poorly in the second half! as the commentary afterwards made apparent, spain was attacking from the sides and the manager failed to make the necessary substitutions to counter their strategy or at least change his formation or something. and while i always knew ronaldo was annoying, i have never seen him play THAT BADLY. zomg. while i wanted them to go through, portugal thoroughly deserved that loss.

but their goalie Eduardo is MAGNIFICENT. and i took a liking to no. 23 Coentrao, i seem to remember him doing some nice work on the side and also some good crosses. plus he is one of those rare players these days who are no-nonsense and don't keep tripping up/falling over/rolling over 'in pain'/etc.

after the match we sat outside macs and slept.

UNTIL, the TV started replaying the England vs Germany match and i was rudely woken up by the commentator's cry of 'Mireslav KLOSEEEE!!!!!!' sigh. i think im going to be haunted by that for a long, long time to come, even though im mostly over it now.
