public law is a lot more interesting when i know how it impacts people. i realised i found the stuff on Minority Rights a lot more interesting because at least i know someone who has been affected by these issues.

my ex-colleague at max brenners is a malaysian, he told us once that he came to singapore to find work because after he graduated from secondary school that was just what everyone did.. find work. his sister went to university, but she had difficulties, because the professors apparently gave preferential grades to the malays to the other races' disadvantage.

all that nonsense i guess must be why there are a lot of malaysian chinese in singapore looking for work or education. this then at least is one area where I think Singapore has done well.. at least its policies on minorities seem to work (or lack thereof) seem to work.

i still remember in jc, during GP consultation, we were discussing an essay question and ms willa chen (now a missus) invited us to think why some people might be richer than others. one possible reason is that some have better jobs than others, because some are more qualified than others. why doesn't everyone have the same qualifications? one possible reason is that some can afford better education than others. and then it kind of goes into a vicious cycle because the poor people who can't afford education continue being poor even in future generations.

(that was when i decided, if i ever become rich, then after meeting my essentials - vespa, wicked guitar, Toms shoes, Hermes bag, fedora - i will use my excess money to build school(s) in indonesia. and maybe other poor countries, but that's a bit ambitious)

ok, so i don't hate public law, but i wish the readings had pictures. =_____=
