} hong kong 2 jan - 8 jan

before i left for hong kong i watched some videos (incl above) to 'get myself in the mood' for hk. but actually, there was really no need... the city is so full of energy it sucks you right in. dont even think i will post photos/describe much cos 1)am lazy and 2)its prob best to experience it for yourself if you havent.

but in short the trip was really fun.. the HKU students were really nice (especially the hilarious Johnny, whose name prob already hints at how funny he is) and the other NUS people who came on the trip were also nice, although admittedly i rest convinced that hong kong is a place which is much more exciting to explore with a few friends, without the awkwardness of sticking in a big group. but nevertheless. the trip left me feeling so eager and keen to learn, and create, and explore, and start my new year proper.

now the excitement has somewhat worn off (sadly i always have this problem when coming back to singapore from elsewhere, its prob why i dont really want to settle here) but am hoping i can at least keep up some of this excitement for the rest of the year because i dont think ive felt like this in a long time.

i miss hearing people speaking canto around me... i think its such a nice language (sounds like the hakka that my grandparents speak), and (to a certain extent) huddling up against the cool winter air, and generally being just a little step away from my comfort zone each day.

the visits to the law firms were really helpful, even if i prob wont ever practise in hong kong, kind of helped me realise the kind of environment i'd love to work in and the kind of work i'd love to do. Tanner De Witt was my favourite by far, i dont think its very often in a law firm that your founding partner is a pink and friendly-looking brit who dresses in a yellow vest to work. C: heheh. the people at Dechert and Clifford Chance were also nice but Dechert's work sounded boring and meaningless (corporate, erk) and Clifford Chance seemed so rigid.

basically i think ive worked out what i don't want...: i dont see any point in entering a big firm and working my way up, unless its some area that i want to devote myself into. also dont like corporate work cos dont see the point in helping rich companies enrich themselves and helping rich CEOs escape fraud, embezzlement, blah blah etc. what i want to do is possibly to find out if i could practise in indon, how troublesome the qualifying process is and (most importantly) if it would make a difference at all and whether i should instead direct my efforts elsewhere (ie some other area).

of course before all this can be decided, also need to factor in how much i suck or dont suck at law/legal skill but i guess thats kinda a we'll-see thing.

ok i started rambling, i think all i really wanted to say was that i really enjoyed myself on this trip and (i know i say this all the time, but its true) i learnt quite a bit about myself and others so that was kinda fun. ok goodnight.
